Friday, October 15 she had a nice dinner with Great Grammie at Claim Jumper. They serve the kids a little snack plate that had a slice of cheese, turkey, applesauce and mandarin oranges. Since Sofie has never tried it we though why not it's kid friendly and the doctor just told us she could have cheese. I handed her the cheese so she could feel it and maybe suck on it, not realizing she would take a big bite and scare us half to death. I wiggled it out of her mouth and broke it down for her. Her first try of cheddar cheese, she loved it. We were all excited that she enjoyed it so much I let her try the turkey, she loved that too and a little applesauce, yumm. Well I later came to realize that I think she likes that we are letting her eat not that she really loves the actually food.
As we finished dinner and were about to leave she caught hold of a receipt and I fished that from her hand too before she put it in her mouth. We left full tummies and lots of family business caught up. Sofie fell asleep right away on our 10 minute drive home we took her straight to the bedroom thinking she would probably wake up shortly. Juan heard her moving so we got her from the room and said "her eyes are red and she is coughing". Then immediately started to think of the too many new foods we let her try. I thought he meant her eye balls were red not her eye lids and that she coughed once. As we were examining her eyes we noticed the redness spreading to her cheek and she continued to cough. We packed up quickly and headed to ER with all the fears and thought of poor babies like Tizoc (Claudias Son) who has suffered from food allergies.
We both trying to remain calm but so panicked we checked into the ER and were there to wait. As we wait but 20 minutes or so we noticed the redness was gone and she had stopped coughing some time before that. Feeling a bit relieved and I know I felt almost a little foolish we decided to still see the doctor just so he could check her breathing.
The DR. who looked like a hippy man and his young "scribe" came in and evaluated and said she was fine looked good however she did have a few red spots in her throat that he wanted to test. He did a swab and poor Sofie crying so hard she could hardly breath. It came back negative for strep (which we knew) and he prescribed her a tablespoon of Benedryl. After all said and done she was fine and the lesson to all was that she was not yet ready for all that food.
